Havenhouse Peer Respite Program
A haven for the healing journey.
Our Program
The Havenhouse Respite Program: In A Nutshell
The Need: Havenhouse is designed for individuals who want more than traditional talk therapy but don't require inpatient behavioral health care — offering a supportive, immersive, and non-judgmental space to heal between the two.
The Setting: Havenhouse offers five-day, six-night peer-supported respite stays for adults coping with trauma, grief, or moral injury, running from Sunday evening check-in through Saturday morning departure. Each respite requires one primary participant currently experiencing PTSD symptoms. We recommend bringing at least one supportive family member or friend — ideally two to five — who is/are also coping with primary or secondary trauma. That said, individuals are welcome to attend the respite on their own as well. Set at a beautifully restored 1887 Carriage House on 20 acres of historic farmland in Elbert County, Colorado, the program creates a private, home-like environment where participants can rest, reconnect, and begin to heal — away from the isolation that so often accompanies trauma.
Schedule & Peer-Support: Mornings are left open and unstructured, giving participants time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lunch with their affinity group, explore the surrounding Black Forest area, spend time with the ranch's animals, or simply rest, breathe, and take in the beauty of the surroundings at their own pace. Each afternoon, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, a trained team of two Peer Support Specialists lead a dedicated window of guided peer-support activities, including GriefShare® sessions, agritherapy through our community garden or indoor hydroponics, art therapy, equine volunteerism via partnership with Safe Landing Horse Rescue, nature walks, and optional faith-based opportunities — all voluntary and tailored to each family's comfort level. In the evenings, the home transitions into a self-governing space, giving participants full privacy and autonomy to rest, reflect, and reconnect with one another.
Meal-Prep: Meals are kept simple and stress-free, with groceries and pre-prepped Dream Dinner® kits fully stocked before arrival.
Media-Use: To help create space for genuine rest and connection, Havenhouse encourages participants to take an intentional break from phones, screens, and the constant pull of everyday digital life during their stay. We ask that common areas remain device-limited so that time together can stay present and meaningful. This isn't about strict rules — it's an invitation to unplug, be fully present with your affinity group, and make the most of this time to rest, reflect, and reconnect.
Add-On Professional Counseling: An optional add-on service includes professional counseling that can be arranged in advance for those who want extra support.
Clinical Support: Every participant receives behavioral health navigation before departure, along with follow-up outreach at 30, 60, and 90 days to help maintain connection to ongoing care. The program is overseen by a Colorado-licensed behavioral health professional who provides monthly consultation and flexible off-hours telehealth availability for non-life-threatening concerns. This ensures that while the Havenhouse model is warm, relational, and non-clinical, it remains grounded in professional, ethical care. Havenhouse is designed to complement — not replace — participants' existing clinical treatment.
Safety: At Havenhouse, we believe healing happens best in an environment where participants feel safe, respected, and supported. Every staff member completes a background check and receives training in Light University's Certificate in Crisis Response and Trauma Care before working with participants, and all staff are CPR and First Aid certified. Our Peer Support Specialists also go on to achieve their full full Peer Support Professional (PSP) Certification in Colorado within 12 months of hire.
Our program operates under a written Safety & Security Plan designed to protect the well-being of everyone on-site. Practical safety measures include:
Private, secure bedrooms with doors that lock from the inside
Lockboxes for personal prescription medication. Lockbox keys stay with the participant and Havenhouse staff never handles participant medication.
Fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits located throughout the house
Evacuation maps posted in every room, along with staff and emergency contact cards
During each stay, our team collaborates with participants to build individualized wellness and crisis-prevention plans, prioritizing compassionate, voluntary support over coercive intervention. Havenhouse also maintains a site-specific Emergency Operations Plan covering fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, and other unexpected events, with regular staff training and drills to ensure readiness.
Havenhouse is a drug-free zone, excepting prescribed medication, and all guests are expected to comply with this policy throughout their stay.
Privacy & Confidentiality: What you share at Havenhouse stays protected. We maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and applicable federal regulations, and we do not share participant information without written consent, except where required by law. Unauthorized recording or photography is prohibited, so participants can feel free to be fully present without fear of exposure.
We maintain rigorous documentation and quality-improvement practices to uphold the highest standards of care. Havenhouse is committed to a trauma-informed culture at every level — because true safety means physical security, emotional care, and the confidence that your story is protected.
Your Choice, Every Step of the Way: Havenhouse is a voluntary program — you're always free to come and go, or to leave entirely, whenever you choose. We never use coercive interventions, except in the rare case of an emergency posing imminent risk to someone's physical safety, where our team will follow established protocols to protect everyone on-site. Counseling, faith-based offerings, and every activity are entirely optional. We're here to walk alongside you, wherever your healing journey leads.
Compassionate Culture: Rooted in compassion, community, and evidence-informed practice, Havenhouse exists to help those who have experienced life-altering trauma find rest, connection, and renewed hope — and to walk alongside them long after their stay has ended.
Who We Serve
Populations We Serve
Havenhouse welcomes adults experiencing PTSD, complex grief, or moral injury — often from circumstances that leave little room for traditional support. Our primary focus is on individuals who have unwillingly caused a fatal accident and are carrying the weight of both trauma and moral injury, though our doors are open to a broader range of underserved populations as well, including:
Individuals who have unwillingly caused a fatal accident
Bereaved parents grieving the loss of a child
First responders, medical professionals, ministers, and caregivers coping with secondary trauma or compassion fatigue
Individuals facing financial, linguistic, cultural, or geographic barriers to care
Individuals seeking faith-integrated care alongside their healing journey
Any other underserved individual coping with PTSD, grief, or moral injury who may not fit neatly into the categories above
Many participants come to Havenhouse because they've found themselves without a clear place to turn — needing more support than talk therapy alone can offer, but not currently requiring inpatient care.
While Havenhouse is a faith-based organization, participation in our program is never conditioned upon adherence to any religious beliefs or practices. No individual will be excluded from services based on their religion, spirituality, worldview, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected characteristics. All faith-based programming is entirely optional, and an alternative, non-faith-based curriculum is available upon request.
Whatever the source of their pain, Havenhouse is here to offer rest, connection, and hope to those who have often been overlooked by traditional systems of care.
To help serve the local Spanish-speaking community, the GriefShare® curriculum and other Havenhouse materials are also available in Spanish, upon request.
The Carriage House: Where History Heals
Program Services
Peer-Led GriefShare®Discussions
Our peer-led GriefShare® curriculum sessions offer a supportive space for those navigating loss to walk the path of grief alongside others who understand. Guided by trained peers who have faced their own losses, these sessions blend structured support with the honesty that only comes from shared experience — because sometimes the most healing thing is simply not grieving alone.
Peer-Led Community Gardening
Peer-Led Agritherapy: Community Garden Our onsite community garden offers a peer-led agritherapy experience rooted in patience, purpose, and growth. Guests take part in planting, tending, and harvesting alongside trained peers, finding grounding through simple, hands-on work with the earth. In colder months, this experience moves indoors to our hydroponics garden, keeping the practice of nurturing something living — and being nurtured in turn — available year-round.
Rescue-to-Rescue Program
In partnership with Safe Landing Horse Rescue in Elbert, CO, our Rescue-to-Rescue program offers a unique healing experience rooted in connection and purpose. Participants work alongside rescued horses, supporting their recovery and care — meaningful work that reflects a simple truth: in caring for another’s healing, we often find our own.
Peer-Led Community Projects
Peer-Led Community Activities Throughout your stay, peer-led activities offer simple, shared moments of connection. Art therapy provides a hands-on way to process emotions without words. Pay-it-forward projects and mini community service activities turn healing outward through small acts of kindness. Nature walks invite quiet reflection amid the Black Forest surroundings, while afternoon game hours bring laughter and easy connection. Led by trained peers, these moments are woven into each day as an invitation, not an obligation.
Optional: Fireside Chapels
Our optional Fireside Chapels offer an intimate, unhurried space for reflection, conversation, and quiet spiritual connection — gathered around a fire, whether outdoors under open sky or indoors by the fireplace. With an optional Christian element woven in for those who welcome it, these gatherings invite participants to slow down, share openly, and find comfort in community. It's a reminder that some of the deepest healing happens not in grand gestures, but in simple moments of presence together.
Optional Add On: Counseling
Optional Add-On: Professional Counseling For those who want additional support, professional counseling is available as an optional add-on to complement your experience. Sessions are led by Colorado licensed counselors and offer a private, confidential space to process deeper emotions, work through personal challenges, or simply have dedicated one-on-one time with a trained professional. Because scheduling is limited, this add-on must be requested and reserved in advance during the application process — it cannot be added once you arrive.
Program Details
About The Carriage House
Havenhouse's respite home is a beautifully restored 1887 carriage house, resting on 20 acres of historic farmland known as Ten Arrows Ranch in Elbert County, Colorado. Once part of the county's original dairy farm, this cozy cottage has been lovingly renovated to preserve its character and charm while offering every modern comfort.
The home features two bedrooms with three beds, a farmhouse-style kitchen with shiplap walls and a wood-burning stove, and a bright living area where guests can gather for reflection or quiet conversation. Outside, a private backyard, fire pit, hammock, and outdoor dining area invite participants to slow down and take in sweeping views of the valley, surrounded by the peace, open sky, and gentle rhythms of farm life.
Whether cozied up by the fire on a cold evening or gathered around the outdoor fire pit under the stars, this historic home offers a true sense of escape — a place where guests can unplug, breathe deeply, and begin to heal.
AirBnb Style Room Service
Ready for Your Arrival Every stay at Havenhouse begins with a home that's been thoughtfully prepared just for you. Prior to each visit, our team provides full Airbnb-style turnover service — deep cleaning the home, laundering and refreshing all linens and towels, and restocking essential supplies — so that participants arrive to a space that feels warm, welcoming, and completely their own. This attention to detail allows guests to focus entirely on rest, connection, and healing from the moment they walk through the door.
The Surroundings
The Surrounding Area Nestled in the quiet countryside of Elbert County, the carriage house sits within a sweeping valley of open pasture, rolling farmland, and distant tree-lined hills — a landscape virtually untouched by the noise of everyday life. The historic Ten Arrows Ranch surrounds guests with the simple rhythms of rural life: grazing fields, farm animals, and wide-open sky.
Just far enough from the busyness of city life yet close enough to the Black Forest and Falcon area, this peaceful rural setting offers the space and stillness so many trauma survivors need to breathe, reflect, and reconnect — with themselves, their loved ones, and the land around them.
Professional Oversight & Support
Every member of our peer-support team brings both professional training and lived experience to their work. All staff complete Light University's Certificate in Crisis Response and Trauma Care and are certified in CPR/First Aid, equipping them with a strong foundation in trauma-informed care, crisis response, and compassionate support.
Within 12 months of hire, staff also work toward full Peer Support Professional (PSP) Certification in Colorado, covering all SAMHSA core competencies for peer workers.
This combination of training and shared experience allows our team to walk alongside participants with both practical skill and genuine understanding — offering support that is knowledgeable, ethical, and deeply human.
Meals, Made Simple
Meal Preferences & Grocery Delivery To keep your stay simple and restorative, meals are planned to require minimal effort. Before arrival, participants complete a meal preference form to select breakfast and lunch staples — think pancake mixes, sandwich fixings, fruit, and easy snacks — along with dinner selections from a rotation of ready-to-assemble meal kits from the local Dream Dinners® meal preparation service.
All groceries and meal kits are delivered and fully stocked in the fridge, freezer, and pantry before you arrive, so there's nothing to plan or shop for once you're here. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options are available to accommodate a range of dietary needs, and participants are welcome to bring their own favorite snacks or treats to personalize their stay.
Trained, Compassionate Peer Support
Havenhouse's peer-support model is grounded in professional accountability. Our program operates under the ongoing oversight of a Colorado-licensed behavioral health professional, who provides monthly consultation on program operations, safety protocols, and adherence to trauma-informed, evidence-based practices.
Should a non-life-threatening concern arise during a stay, this licensed professional is available during flexible scheduling via telehealth.
It's important to note that Havenhouse is designed to supplement and support traditional clinical care — not replace it; participants are encouraged to maintain any existing treatment relationships, and our team can help connect guests with additional behavioral health resources as needed.
This layer of clinical guidance ensures that while our peer-support model remains warm, relational, and non-clinical in nature, it is always grounded in sound, professional care.

Application Process
The following steps are required for all respite program applications.
1. Complete All Applications
Click on the link below to get to the application site. The primary participant will complete the full application, while any accompanying support persons will complete a shorter, abridged version.
4. Provide Income Verification
To ensure that Havenhouse remains accessible to those who need it most, we offer a sliding-scale contribution model based on household income. As part of the application process, all participants will be asked to provide income verification documentation (I.e. W-2, paystub…). This information helps us determine an appropriate, affordable contribution level for your stay and ensures that no one is turned away due to financial hardship.
2. Provide a Behavioral Health Referral
As part of the application process, we ask primary participants to provide contact information for a behavioral health professional they currently work with. Our team will send that provider a brief questionnaire to confirm that the Havenhouse Respite Program is an appropriate level of care at this time and to verify current PTSD-related symptoms.
3. Complete a Standard Background Check
As part of the application process, all primary participants and support persons will be asked to consent to and complete a standard background check. This step is primarily used to screen for registered sex offender status and a history of repeated violent offenses, helping us maintain a safe, secure environment for all guests and staff at Havenhouse. This process is non-punitive in nature — its purpose is solely to support a safe environment for everyone, not to disqualify individuals based on past circumstances alone.
