What is a Peer-Supported Respite Crisis Stay?

The heart of Havenhouse is our desire to provide peer-support respite stays.

Peer support crisis respite is a voluntary, short-term (typically 1 week), home-like alternative to hospital-based behavioral health crisis care. It is staffed 24/7 by trained, trauma-informed peer support specialists with lived experience of crisis or trauma. They provide empathetic, compassionate, non-clinical support.

All respite stays are voluntary, and participants preserve full autonomy, freedom of movement and can leave at any time.

These evidence-based programs operate with professional behavioral health oversight and have demonstrated benefits for individuals experiencing PTSD and other mental health challenges. When properly managed, peer respites can become state-licensed in Colorado and may receive Medicaid waiver funding for eligible participants.

Designed to provide early intervention, peer respites help reduce reliance on emergency and inpatient services, and support both individuals in crisis and their families.

They are designed for individuals who need more than talk therapy but less than inpatient care.

What Makes Us Stand Out?

Currently, there are no known faith-based or in-person resources (worldwide) for those who have unwillingly caused a fatal accident. In addition, resources are highly limited for our other primary reach populations.

Further, our program will incorporate the following evidence-based therapies for our respite center guests. Many of these services are currently unavailable in other respite centers, nationwide:

  1. Private Retreats for one group of guests at a time. Guest groups include individual trauma survivors and a select few of their close family and friends. One group has full private access to respite facilities and the on-site peer support staff at all times.

  2. Highly Subsidized Guest Contributions via monthly partner donations will keep recommended costs low for program participants.

  3. Equine Therapy via a local Horse Rescue Partnership

  4. Agritherapy (Garden Therapy) via an on-site Community Garden

  5. Optional Weekly Chapels & Devotionals

  6. Optional Professional Counseling sessions

  7. Pro bono Resource Navigation for local behavioral health services

  8. Optional lowkey Community Events such as inspirational movie nights, art sessions, pay-it-forward & mini community service projects, games, trail walks, firepit chats, and more.

Return of Investment!

Investment Rewards

At Havenhouse, we are committed to community support programs that are both compassion-driven and fiscally responsible.

According to a 2013 study entitled “The Effectiveness of a Peer-Staffed Crisis Respite Program as an Alternative to Hospitalization” by Bouchery et al., participants of peer respite averaged 2.9 less behavioral health hospitalizations per year than their non-respite counterparts. According to this study, an average of $2,138 dollars were saved per participant each month on Medicaid expenses. That is equivalent to approximately $25,656 in savings per participant each year. (To be conservative, we have not adjusted for inflation.)

We plan to serve at least 48 different PTSD participants each year at the respite center, along with their close family and friends. Therefore, we estimate total taxpayer savings to be over $1.2 million in annual dollars through avoided behavioral health hospitalizations and Medicaid costs.

*We anticipate about 144 behavioral health hospitalizations prevented annually.

Considering estimated annual operating costs of approximately $170,000, we anticipate an annual net savings for US taxpayers of over $1 million dollars and a Return of Investment, or ROI, of 6.15.

This means every $1 invested returns about $6.15 in savings, giving stakeholders confidence that their support delivers measurable community impact.
